Thread count gets all the attention, but it's only part of the story. Here's what actually determines how a sheet feels — and how to shop smarter.
Thread count is the number of threads woven into a square inch. Up to a point, higher counts feel denser and smoother. But beyond roughly 400, brands often inflate the number by counting multi-ply yarns — a bigger figure that doesn't mean a better sheet.
Fibre matters more. Long-staple cotton produces stronger, finer yarns and a smoother finish, regardless of the count on the label. Weave matters too: percale is crisp and cool, while sateen is silky and warm.
So ignore the marketing arms race. Look for long-staple cotton, a weave that suits how you sleep, and a count in the 200–400 range. Get those right, and the number becomes a footnote — the comfort speaks for itself.
